MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Alabama State baseball team is 21-8 this season.

It's the best start in school history.

"We have everything. We have hitting. We have pitching. Our defense is playing pretty good behind our pitching," said catcher Richard Gonzalez.

The Hornets also boast a league best 12-1 record in the SWAC.

This team is showing it is built for the long haul.

"The experience is what is really paying off right now. The guys certainly have the talent to continue to play at a high level," said coach Mervyl Melendez.

Maturity is a leading reason for the success on the field.

Hitting is also a key.

The Hornets lead the NCAA in total hits with 295.

They are fifth in total runs with 210.

ASU has a team batting average of .302.
