MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A man is under arrest and charged with two counts of felony first degree assault after Selma police say he shot two people while they were gambling with dominoes.
Authorities say Sammy Earl Jackson was taken into custody Friday morning, charged and transported to the Dallas County Jail where he's being held on a $60,000 bond.
The investigation started after police were called to Vaughn Regional Hospital's emergency room around 12:30 a.m. where a woman was being treated for a gunshot wound to the back. She was later transported to a Montgomery hospital.
The second victim, a male, later showed up at the hospital, according to police. The victim refused to be seen by ER staff for the gunshot wound to his abdomen, according to Lt. Curtis Muhannad, but he did allow police to photograph the wound.
During the course of the investigation, police learned that the shooting happened in the 1600 block of Maple Street where the suspect and victims were playing dominoes.
Following a verbal altercation between Jackson and the male victim, police say Jackson pulled a .25 caliber semi automatic pistol. That's when investigators say the female victim intervened and was shot in the back and the male was shot in the abdomen.
After speaking with both victims, detectives started their search for Jackson. He turned himself in after investigators made contact with his family members.
The weapon used in the shooting has not been recovered.
