OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - An 18-year-old man is dead after drowning in an Opelika motel swimming pool, according to the Opelika Police Department.

The LaFayette man, whose name has not been released, was a guest at the Travelodge motel on Columbus Parkway when around 5:15 p.m. Sunday he began having trouble and drowned.

The victim was removed from the swimming pool and emergency personnel administered live saving measures. He was transported to East Alabama Medical Center where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

The reason for the victim's distress prior to drowning is unknown. His body was subsequently transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for an autopsy.
