New movie theater opens in east Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Carmike Cinemas rolled out the red carpet Wednesday evening as they opened up the new Chantilly 13 movie theatre in East Montgomery

On top of the usual movie theater concessions, champagne and hors d'oeuvres were also served before the ribbon was finally cut.

"It's exciting to be here tonight," said Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange. "It's a great addition to our community. We're looking forward to many years of good revenue coming from this place."

Strange says despite being more of a golf player in his free time, he'll still be at the new theater from time to time.

"This'll be a place we come just to bring our grand kids when it's appropriate and to have fun and we'll certainly be around to see some of the great things that are happening in the big D theater here," Strange said.

The "Big D Experience" is one of the main draws of the theatre. The screen is 81 feet wide, four stories tall, and has 600 leather, rocking seats.

Another potential draw is the unique concession menu. After being approved a liquor license in June, movie lovers will be able to get wine and beer alongside their popcorn.

"We truly pick that market that we know is gonna support that type of a concept and we knew that this community was really kind of behind an opportunity to sell that here in our concession stands," said Crystal Trawick, Marketing Project Manager with Carmike Cinemas. "I think the beer and wine is something that's going to be well received here, and so far we've had a lot of positive feedback bringing that into Montgomery."

Regular admission costs $10 and tickets for films that begin between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. will cost just $5.75 every day of the week.
