Auburn Tigers' mascot Aubie wins Capital One Mascot Challenge 2014
AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - Auburn University's sports mascot Aubie was named the 2014 Capital One Mascot Challenge winner Wednesday after competing in challenges against 15 other universities' mascots.
Each week between Nov. 17 and Dec. 7 fans had a chance to vote for their favorite mascot as it went head-to-head with opponents.
Aubie bested Western Kentucky University's Big Red in Game 1 of the quarterfinals by a wide margin of 83 to 17 percent. He then took on the University of South Carolina's Cocky and bested him, though by a slimmer 51 to 49 margin.
Aubie took on UCLA's Joe Bruin in the championship and came out on top.
"Overwhelmed to win my first ever @CapitalOne Mascot Challenge!! Would not have been possible without the support of the @AUFAMILY! War Eagle," Aubie tweeted after learning he was the winner.
Capital One chose Auburn alumni and former athlete Charles Barkley to announce the winner.
Auburn has been Auburn's official mascot for 36 years and in those years has claimed 8 mascot national championships.
