GENEVA CO., AL (WSFA) - With his left hand on a bible and right hand raised, Tony Helms took the oath of office as Geneva County Sheriff Tuesday.

"Excited, happy, and overwhelmed. You think about it for years and we talk about getting out and doing something else, but I couldn't do anything different; this is the only thing I know," Helms said.

Helms is no stranger to law enforcement. He started his career in 1981. Until being elected to this position, he was Geneva County's Chief Deputy. Now as Sheriff, he is ready to hit the ground running.

"I've got a few new ideas about how I want to try to attack some things. The major issue is going to be the jail, and the number two issue is serving the people of the county and try to improve the communication," said Helms.

While Helms will have big shoes to fill following in the footsteps of longest serving sheriff Greg Ward, residents believe because of his experience and leadership the office is in good hands.

"I just wouldn't have missed this. I hope it's 20 more years before we have to replace a sheriff. I look for nothing but good things to happen in Geneva County as we move forward," said Jere Jensen, Geneva County resident.

"People realize that they elected a good sheriff," said Bob Hendrix, Geneva County resident.

So with the future looking bright in Geneva County, everyone seems optimistic about what will happen over the next four years.

Hagler Ward was also sworn in as Geneva County Coroner on Tuesday.
