MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The top Pre-K program in the nation is right here in Alabama! For the ninth year, the National Institute for Early Education Research has named Alabama's program number one.

Officials do say that although it is rated the best, more could be done to improve it. Alabama is one of only five states in the country to meet or exceed all of the benchmarks set by the National Institute for Early Education, but only 13 percent of 4-years-olds currently have access to the state program because of limited funding.

Officials with the Alabama School Readiness Alliance and its business-led Pre-K Task Force are leading a 10-year initiative, now in its third year, to fully fund the program. In April, the Alabama State Senate unanimously approved a $13.5 million increase for Pre-K funding.

If approved by the House and signed into law by Governor Robert Bentley, it would open at least 145 more classrooms serving another 2,600 more 4-year-olds.
