Opp, AL (WSFA) - Officials with the State Bureau of the Investigation say, the subject involved in the officer involved shooting in Opp has died.
SBI identified the man involved in an officer-involved shooting in Covington County Thursday afternoon as 29-year-old Pierre Gabriel Koellner. SBI has taken over the investigation as the request of Opp Police.
The Opp Police Department said its officers, as well as state and county authorities, responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 84 west between Babie and Sanford around 2:30 p.m. Witnesses told officers that the driver of one of the vehicles fled on foot, according to the police department.
Opp police officers located Koellner near Leon Road, but he reportedly refused to remove his hands from his pockets. When he did, he pulled out a gun and refused to put it down. Police say Koellner then pointed the gun at the officers, fired it and charged at them. The officers returned fire and shot him. The officer was not injured.
SBI officials said once they've completed their investigation, the findings will be turned over to the Covington County District Attorney's office for review.
