Man charged with harassing Troy University freshman
TROY, AL (WSFA) - A man is facing charges after a freshman at Troy University says she was kidnapped and robbed off campus.
According to the Troy Police Department, Andre Harley, 48, of Troy was arrested Friday and charged with harassment. Police say they've received at least 20 harassment and panhandling complaints involving Harley in the past.
"He can be very forward sometimes, and he knows where the line is, where he can go to the very edge without committing a felony or any type of serious crime," said Troy Police Lt. Bryan Weed.
The victim says she left campus Thursday night to pick up dinner at Chick-fil-A. When she was driving out of the parking lot, she says a man flagged her down. She thought she possibly dropped something so she stopped. She says he asked her for a ride and before she could respond, he opened the door and got in.
He directed her to go to the ATM, and she did exactly what he told her. She took out $60, and he told her to drop him off at his house.
"I did not know if he had a weapon, if he was dangerous, so I felt the best thing to do was to cooperate until I could get out of the situation," Jayme Johnson said.
"I would stress that anybody, not only students, but to stress to loved ones to always be aware of their environment and if they see someone approaching their car that they don't know to keep their windows up and their doors locked," Weed said.
Troy University is having safety meetings with students Monday and Tuesday in the Claudia Crosby Auditorium at 7 p.m.
