MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A Montgomery teen has been arrested and is charged with murder following the shooting death Wednesday of 20-year-old Daniel McCall Jr.

According to Lieutenant Denise Barnes, 16-year-old Jawon Marquis Woodward is charged with one count of murder after turning himself into MPD detectives on Thursday. Following his arrest Woodward was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Facility where he is being held under a $75,000 bond.

The shooting happened in the 5800 block of East Shirley Lane around 9 p.m. When police arrived at the scene they located McCall Jr. who has sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office confirms that Woodward is the son of convicted murderer Mario Woodward. Mario Woodward was convicted and sentenced to death in 2008 for the 2006 murder of Montgomery Police Officer Keith Houts.

Montgomery District Attorney Daryl Bailey this case is not an anomaly, his office is getting cases on children, of parents he prosecuted 20 years ago.

"So many kids are without a positive male role model in their life and that has to be an extremely important factor in some of these crimes that we're seeing," Bailey said.

Bailey goes a step further to say that is also has to play a factor in the number of cases his office is prosecuting.  Not including this current murder, 103 homicide cases are pending in his office. This, following a record month in August, where the district prosecuted 5 murder cases in 4 weeks.

"We have got to reach these young people before they don't care, and they are influenced by others." Bailey explained.

Woodward is not enrolled in Montgomery Public Schools, and is currently in the Montgomery County Detention Facility on $75,000 bond for murder.  As Woodward waits for his case to go before a grand jury, his father waits in Donaldson Correctional facility, on death row.

This is the 27th homicide of 2015 in the City of Montgomery. No additional information surrounding the arrest or the shooting has been made available for release.
