HOUSTON CO., AL (WSFA) - The United States Marshals Service arrested a fugitive, who was wanted in North Carolina, near the city of Dothan on Wednesday.
Michael Smith, who was wanted for the home burglary of an elderly widow, was arrested after U.S. Marshals and Houston County Sheriff's Deputies trapped him on U.S. Highway 84 in Houston County.
Smith was wanted by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department in Murphy, North Carolina after he and three other individuals allegedly stole a widow's life savings.
Two days after the burglary, the four individuals made contact with police officers in Eufaula. A chase ensued, and the Eufaula Police Department was able to capture three of the suspects, but Smith was able to get away.
The Eufaula Police Department requested the assistance of the U.S. Marshals in locating Smith.
On Wednesday, Smith was captured in Houston County with a female associate on a motorcycle. Smith confessed to using the widow's money to purchase approximately $97,000 worth of property.
All of the property was recovered and is being held for North Carolina authorities.
Smith was placed in the Dale County Jail, where he will remain pending his extradition to North Carolina. Smith also faces charges in Eufaula.
