MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Huntingdon Hawks clinched the USA South title with style Saturday after defeating Maryville 38-14 at W. James Stanford Stadium in Montgomery.
The Hawks' defense dominated Maryville for the first three quarters, not allowing a point until the final quarter of play. However, the story of the game was a career performance from quarterback Luke Bailey.
Huntingdon scored on their first drive, setting an early tone for the afternoon.
After stopping Maryville cold on the game's opening drive, Huntingdon capped a twelve-play drive with an eleven-yard touchdown run by quarterback Luke Bailey.
Huntingdon extended their lead early in the second quarter with a 35-yard field goal by kicker Chase Young to give the Hawks a 10-0 lead.
Midway through the second quarter, Huntingdon capitalized on a Maryville fumble to score yet again.
On the first play of the resulting drive, Luke Bailey connected with Blake Malter for a 27-yard touchdown. The Hawks took the 17-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Bailey and the Huntingdon offense picked up where they left off in the first half.
After receiving the kickoff, Luke Bailey led the Hawks to the six-yard line of Maryville. Then, Bailey connected with Nick Haas for a six-yard touchdown to give Huntingdon a 24-0 lead early in the quarter.
The play of the afternoon came in the early in the fourth quarter with Huntingdon still leading 24-0.
On the seventh play of the drive, Bailey threw a pass to receiver Willie Coleman for an explosive 56-yard touchdown, Bailey's fourth touchdown on the afternoon.
On the ensuing drive, Maryville finally got on the board with a seven-yard rush from running back Deshjion Whitlock, closing the gap to 31-7.
However, on Huntingdon's next drive, Bailey scored his fifth touchdown with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Nick Haas to extend the lead back to 31.
Maryville added another score late in the fourth quarter, but Huntingdon easily ran away with the 38-14 victory.
Luke Bailey finished with an impressive 19 completions on 25 passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns through the air. He added 31 yards and a touchdown on the ground as well.
Defensively, Huntingdon made big plays all afternoon to prevent Maryville from closing the gap.
Maryville actually outgained the Hawks by over 60 yards. However, Maryville only converted 27 percent of their third downs, stalling many drives before Maryville could get into scoring position.
Huntingdon improves their record 7-1 with their win over Maryville, and clinched the USA South conference championship. The Hawks close their regular season next week against Averett at 1:00 p.m. in Montgomery.
