MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Capitol Book & News Company has served the Montgomery community since 1950, but its owners are saying goodbye and closing their doors in January.

Thomas and Cheryl Upchurch, who have owned the store for 37 yeas, say they are retiring from the book business and want to "take it easy for a while." The couple added that they have many regrets as they leave the Montgomery book business.

"We won't have an independent bookstore to visit in Montgomery," the two owners said in a statement on the store's website. "We'll miss all of you. You have meant more to us than you can ever know."

The bookstore, that has been a staple in the Cloverdale district, will continue to sell books and operate like normal through Christmas, according to their website.

Capitol Book & News is located on Fairview Avenue in the Old Cloverdale district.
