AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - Auburn University is celebrating a big win after becoming the first Bicycle Friendly University in Alabama.
The League of American Bicyclist recently recognized the University with the Silver Bicycle Friendly Award. AU joins 127 colleges and universities from across the country who made this list.
Over the last several years, infrastructure to support this form of transportation has been laid. With 12 miles of bike lanes, more than 3,000 bike racks, and other amenities and incentives the campus is working to make pedaling around campus easier. The investment leaders took looks to bring forth a large return with 3,500 bikes currently registered.
"A 600 car parking deck is $9 million. That's very expensive for a university to spend when they have other academic priorities. You have to look for alternate modes of transportation on the campus and certainly bicycling is one of the cheapest and probably the best one," said Don Andre, Auburn University Parking Services Manager.
"It's great for your own personal well being. It is a great way to get in exercise as well as practical way to get around. It is also good from an environmental perspective cause it reduces air pollution and reduces carbon emissions that are contributing to climate change," said Amy Strickland with the Auburn University Office of Sustainability.
