AUMC distributes close to 500 Thanksgiving meals to families in need
LEE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - A church in Lee County is making sure those who are less fortunate are able to enjoy a meal with their families this Thanksgiving.
Hundreds of volunteers gathered at the Auburn United Methodist Church on Friday to load up cars with turkeys and all the fixings.
"It means we will have a big dinner that we might not have had otherwise," said Barbara Casteel.
Pastor George Mathison believes this day goes beyond just feeding those in need.
"Every time we put a turkey in someone's car, there will be children and families sitting around a table and Gods love from our church is going to be manifested through that meal," said George Mathison, Senior Minister at AUMC.
The AUMC food pantry has seen a lot of growth over the past 15 years. The first Thanksgiving they handed out just six turkeys. This year close to 500.
"This is the highlight of our year," said volunteer Reeder Dulaney.
Reeder Dulaney has volunteered with the pantry since it opened.
"I love being the hands and feet of Christ. I love getting to serve," said Dulaney.
AUMC will not stop with just these thanksgiving meals, they are already preparing to provide families with dinners for Christmas. You do have to preregister in order to get a meal.
