Dothan holiday bicycle drive provides wheels for children in need
DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - The Houston County Department of Human Resources and Magic 93.1 Radio teamed up this week to deliver bikes to children in need this Christmas.
The radio station held a bike drive Wednesday and Thursday at the Southside Walmart in Dothan. Their goal was to collect 93 bikes for children in the Wiregrass and they came out better than expected with an additional 20 bikes!
"Majority of them stay in Dothan, some may go to Enterprise [and] some may go to Ozark," Magic 93.1 Program Manager Marcus Kage said.
The radio station received more than half of its goal Wednesday.
DHR, Protective Services representative, Jade Mathis, says the bikes will go to children in their program. They've already started delivering bikes that were collected on Wednesday.
"It really means a lot to our families because most of the families we come across are like in a financial crisis, and for us to be able to donate or be able to give them and help them with Christmas presents for their children during the holiday season is very awesome, and we're so appreciative," Mathis said.
Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz stopped by to support the cause by buying three bikes.
"I've been blessed to be apart of this for a few years, and you know bikes get our kids outside having fun and it's good for wellness," Schmitz said.
Thursday's donations will be delivered to DHR on Friday at 8 a.m.
If you would like to donate after the drive, you can d rop off bikes at the Houston County DHR office on Ross Clark Circle in Dothan.
