AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - The tweet made it official. Auburn linebackers coach Lance Thompson is leaving the Plains for another position with the South Carolina Gamecocks and its new head coach, Will Muschamp. Thompson was a defensive assistant coach under Muschamp during his stint as AU's defensive coordinator in 2015.
Thompson, who just the day prior to the announcement, was in Birmingham where he helped the Tigers' defense hold off Memphis 31-10 in the Birmingham Bowl. He's already in the Palmetto State.
The photo tweet said it was "a new day!!!" and that he was celebrating in Newport Beach. He ended it with #GoGamecocks.
Thompson, ranked the nation's No. 1 recruiter on the Ultimate ESPN 300 power rankings and 2008 Rivals 'national recruiter of the year', was hired away from Auburn's in-state rival - the Crimson Tide - in early 2015.
Shortly after Thompson's tweet, Muschamp sent out his own. It read, simply "#SpursUp!".
The University of South Carolina's Athletics Department issued a statement confirming the hire, saying Thompson will be the assistant head coach of the defense and defensive line coach.
"I'm excited to have Coach Thompson join our staff," Muschamp said. "He did a great job calling the Auburn defense in their bowl win over Memphis. He has coached multiple positions throughout his career and has a great understanding of our defensive system. He will be an outstanding addition to our staff."
Prior to their time at Auburn, Thompson and Muschamp previously worked together in then-LSU head coach Nick Saban's program back in 2002-2003.
Following the win over Memphis Wednesday, Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn confirmed that he'd hired LSU defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to fill the same roll at AU.
