TUSKEGEE, AL (WSFA) - A Tuskegee family is clinging to their faith after a 29-year-old man was shot and killed Sunday.

Nordrick James was killed in front of a home in the 1500 block of Ashdale Road. It was the first homicide of the year in the city.

The victim would have turned 30 next month. Instead of planning his birthday celebration, James' family members are preparing for his funeral.

"I can't put it into words, but I am torn apart," said Frankie James, Nordrick's mother.

For Frankie James, losing a loved one is an all to familiar nightmare. In 1999 her father was murdered, and then in 2010, her son, Frank, was killed in Tuskegee.

"This last murder has really destroyed me. He was a father, a brother, a grandson, a cousin. He was everything to us. Nordrick's life counted. We loved Nordrick. He was important to us. He was not disposable to us," Frankie James said.

Melvin Sparks Jr., 35, has been arrested and charged with the murder in the case. He remains behind bars with a $200,000 bond, according to court documents.

"I want to know what happened. I miss Nordrick so much I can hardly sleep at night. I just want to get to the bottom of this," said Larry Woods, Nordrick's father.

The family is now waiting for justice to be served.

"I hope this man is punished to the full extent," Frankie James said.

"Jesus is the only thing holding me together right now," Woods said.

"We are walking now in the grace of the Lord because I can't physically handle this," Frankie James said.

This is an on-going investigation. The Tuskegee Police Department hasn't released the motive behind the shooting but did say there was a dispute between the two parties.
