MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Retired United Methodist Bishop William Wesley Morris died Thursday morning at the age of 78, according to the United Methodist Church.
Wesley suffered a massive heart attack at his Nashville-area home, according to the UMC Tennessee Conference.
According to the church, Morris led the Alabama-West Florida Episcopal Area from 1992-2000 and was the first African American to hold that position.
He was among the clergy who officiated at the funeral of former Alabama governor George Wallace in 1998.
Morris also oversaw the Nashville Episcopal Area. He retired in 2008.
