MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - After our Friday night flurries and the cold weekend we've just experienced, I'd say we're officially in the midst of Winter. Temperatures this morning were just as cold as the last few days. But we're gearing up for a brief warmup, followed by a brief cooldown, followed by another bigger warmup that should make for a great weekend...
TODAY: Winds are turning southerly as we speak, and that's a recipe for a warmup. The temperature climb today will be significant with places going from the upper 20s to around 60 degrees by afternoon. Many areas are seeing sunshine right now. A thin veil of cloud cover is already evident on satellite and should continue to progressively thicken west to east as the day wears on. By afternoon, west Alabama should be more cloudy than sunny in advance of our next storm system.
TUESDAY: An approaching cold front will allow for an isolated shower or two to pop on radar for your morning commute. But many will stay mainly dry. The best chance of rain waits until afternoon with the arrival of the front itself. A line of showers will spread west to east into the evening, but very meager instability will limit us to just rain with a random rumble of thunder or two. No severe weather with this one. Temperatures will be quite mild warming into the lower and middle 60s.
Showers will continue on/off into Tuesday night and Wednesday...mainly across the southern third of Alabama...behind the cold front. That means by late Tuesday night into Wednesday our lingering rain won't be falling into pleasantly mild air. Highs Wednesday will struggle to climb out of the upper 40s to lower 50s. We'll have to watch whether enough leftover moisture can get flung back into north Alabama. The air may be cold enough for something other than rain well to our north. No wintry weather issues for us despite the cooldown.
LOOKING AHEAD: A leftover shower remains possible mainly across southeast Alabama Thursday while the rest of us stay on the cool side. But the cold push doesn't last long. A moderating trend kicks back in Friday into the weekend as temperatures surge into the 60s with sunshine. Even though we're only at Monday there's plenty of reason to be excited about the weekend with weather like that.
