OZARK, AL (WSFA) - The remains of a man's body were discovered inside a burning vehicle in Ozark Wednesday morning, investigators said.

Now, they're working to identify the victim and unravel the circumstances that led to his death.

Firefighters with the Marley Mill VFD responded to the blaze on Dale County Road 5 where they found a van fully engulfed in flames. The unknown victim's body was recovered after the flames were extinguished.

Now, Ozark police are working with forensic specialists to identify the person and an autopsy has been performed.

Ozark Police Chief Marlos Walker believes the man may have stopped to work on his vehicle. Agents with the State Fire Marshals office, the State Bureau of Investigation and the Dale County Sheriff's office are assisting in the investigation.

"We haven't positively identified the person," Marlos said. "We are working some leads that are giving us some hints on who it could be, but we are working and the lab is also working on that with fingerprints and dental records."

This is an ongoing investigation. Law enforcement officers are interviewing several people in the area, though specifics on the questions have not been released. Police plan to release more information on this investigation Friday.
