PIKE CO., AL (WSFA) - An unpaid debt of $200 to make a marijuana purchase appears to be the reason a man was shot eight times early Wednesday morning, according to Pike County Sheriff Russell Thomas. The suspect has since confessed and is charged with attempted murder.
The victim was found lying in the parking lot of a gas station Highway 167 around 5:45 a.m. He was airlifted to a Montgomery hospital where he remains in guarded condition in the intensive care unit. His name has not been released.
Thomas say investigators took William Joseph Sunday, a Coffee County resident, into custody. A .45 caliber handgun that was used in the shooting was also recovered, the sheriff said.
During an interview, Sunday told investigators that he and the victim had been in a feud for more than two weeks over the money he'd fronted the victim to buy drugs. He hadn't been paid back.
With the help of the Coffee County Sheriff's Office, a search of Sunday's home turned up marijuana, guns, scales, and other paraphernalia for distribution of marijuana.
Sunday remains in the Pike County Jail.
