AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - Saturday was the fifth annual Finish on the 50 running festival in Auburn. For one of the runners, this race marked the end of a journey that has taken her to all 50 states.
Cheers erupted inside Jordan-Hare Stadium as Auburn alumna Ashley Ahner ran on to the field and crossed the finish line.
"It's awesome to actually be the one everyone is watching for once instead of football players," said Ahner.
Ahner was all smiles as she placed her medal around her neck, and celebrated successfully running 50 half marathons in 50 states.
"Having it all be complete is surreal," said Ahner.
The 28-year-old set this goal back when she was a student at Auburn University.
"By the time I graduated, with my MBA, I had done a race in five in different states and thought why not keep going," said Ahner.
Over the course of five years, she made her big dream a reality.
"I never thought I would be able to go out to Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, or West Virginia. Like every state has something different," said Ahner.
With a deep love for Auburn, she couldn't think of a better place for her finale.
"It has meant a lot to me to finish out the big goal somewhere that is home to me," said Ahner.
Ashley is already training for a Half Iron Man that will happen in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She also would like to possibly run some races on different continents.
