ELMORE, AL (WSFA) - The Alabama Department of Corrections is investigating two unrelated incidents at Staton Correctional Facility in Elmore that happened within about an hour of each other Monday.

The first incident happened around 3:35 p.m. when a fight broke out between three inmates in a housing area of the facility. DOC spokesman Bob Horton said correctional officers were able to detain the inmates and secure the area before assessing the inmates for injuries.

Horton said one inmate suffered several puncture wounds and another had a laceration to his wrist. Both were transported to an off-site medical facility for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The third inmate was treated at the facility's infirmary.

An hour and fifteen minutes later, Horton says an inmate was assaulted by another inmate in one of the facility dorms. While specific details of the assault and extent of injuries were not released, the inmate was transported to a local hospital for treatment. "Reports indicate the inmate is recovering from his injuries," Horton said.

The assaults are considered isolated incidents and unrelated.
