MILLBROOK, AL (WSFA) - A man shot and injured his wife before fatally shooting himself Thursday morning, according to the Millbrook Police Department.
The suspect was identified as 78-year-old Hugh Langdale Jr.
Millbrook police were called to the 200 block of Fraley Lane around 7:15 a.m. Thursday where they found a 77-year-old woman suffering from two gunshot wounds to her upper torso.
The victim told officers her husband shot her at their home, and she went to a neighbor's house for help.
Millbrook police set up a perimeter around the couple's home on Country Place Drive after the suspect barricaded himself inside. During the standoff, officers heard a single gunshot.
With the help of a robot, officers were able to determine Langdale died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Neighbor Bobby Sailors was shocked by the scene Thursday.
"He was a big, healthy guy in the beginning but really deteriorated and had to use a walker," Sailors said of his neighbor.
Sailors said he lost a neighbor and a friend of more than 20 years.
"I began missing him," Sailors said. "His dog died about a year ago and he stopped walking."
The couple is said to have been among the first to move in the subdivision when it was built in the late 1980s.
The female victim was transported a hospital and was listed in stable condition Thursday night.
