MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The combination of high heat and high humidity prompted heat advisories yesterday. We're in a repeat performance of steamy conditions today so it's no surprise heat advisories have already been issued for parts of the state. As we continue heat up today, we could see more heat advisories issued for our area. Afternoon highs will likely max out in the upper 90s this afternoon. Humid conditions will give us a heat index (feel like temperature) anywhere between 100 - 107 degrees this afternoon.
Remember to monitor how the high heat if effecting your body. Remember these safety tips as you are out and about during this steamy day.
- Slow down. Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day. Individuals at risk should stay in the coolest available place, not necessarily indoors.
- Dress for summer. Lightweight light-colored clothing reflects heat and sunlight, and helps your body maintain normal temperatures.
- Drink plenty of water or other non-alcohol fluids. Your body needs water to keep cool. Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Spend more time in air-conditioned places. Air conditioning in homes and other buildings markedly reduces danger from the heat. If you cannot afford an air conditioner, spending some time each day (during hot weather) in an air conditioned environment affords some protection.
STORM CHANCES: We're already seeing a few small scale storms this morning and as we heat up today our storm chances will increase. Our hot and moist setup brings in the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon. Main hazards will include heavy rain, frequent lightning, gusty winds, and small hail.
Rainfall will not effect everyone, but we're expecting a greater coverage of rain than what we experienced yesterday. Isolated to scattered storm activity will have the potential to last well into the night due to our above normal temperatures and the development of outflow boundaries.
