MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The River Region United Way hosted a free one-hour seminar on Tuesday to help nonprofit organizations and the community understand the recent changes to the Fair Labor Standards act.
The event, which began at 8 a.m., focused on the changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act and the changes could potentially impact nonprofit organizations serving the community. The seminar was conducted by Mr. Richard Lehr, a founding partner of Lehr, Middlebrooks, Vreeland & Thompson of Birmingham, AL.
"The federal government made significant changes to the act that will become effective in December of this year." River Region United Way CEO Jimmy Hill said. "It affects the way we categorize employees, either exempt or non-exempt, and it can have a huge impact on the way non-profits do their work."
Nonprofits and businesses were given the opportunity to ask questions about the changes including those like exemptions for part-time employees.
