LEE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - On Saturday, hundreds gathered in Waverly to celebrate the most popular garden vegetable in America.
The Waverly Tomato Showdown started nine years ago, as an office competition at Wickles Pickles, and now it's an area tradition.
As part of the festivities, people were able to enjoy the famous signature bacon, lettuce, and tomato bar.
The annual tomato growing contest was also a big hit among attendees. This year, 18 competitors took part in hopes of winning a trophy and bragging rights.
"The tomatoes are judged on taste, texture, flavor, and overall enjoyment is counted twice. This is an awesome regional celebration of gardeners, live music, and food. Small town life is great and sweet and there is something nostalgic about it," said Lacey Howell, Waverly Tomato Showdown Mistress of Ceremonies.
All proceeds raised from the Tomato Showdown will benefit the town of Waverly.
