OZARK, AL (WSFA) - Hometown Lenders Mortgage loan company is lighting up the grill to show support for law enforcement.
Friday afternoon, the company kicked off their first Back the Blue Cookout at Ozark Police Department.
Hometown Lenders is traveling from one police department to another to hosts cookouts. Friday 's cookout in Ozark was open to any law enforcement officer who wished to attend.
They cooked hamburgers and hot dogs to go with snacks and drinks. Officers also got t-shirts and koozies as a thank you for their service.
At a time when police are being criticized and scrutinized across the country, the company would like to see more community support for law enforcement.
"All we wanted to do as a company, and as a community, we want to show the police department how much we appreciate what they do and how much we need them. We wanted to cook for them today and let them know they're appreciated in the community and stop listening to the hate that's going on around the world," said Tim Watson, Branch Manager at Hometown Lenders.
"It's very important on both sides for the community themselves to give back and to know that 'hey, these men and women are out here doing their job that is, a lot of the time, considered a thankless job and it's important for the men and women in blue to know their community is behind them,'" said Marlos Walker, Ozark Chief of Police.
Watson says the next stop is the Geneva County Sheriff's Office. He plans to have a cookout there next Friday from 12 to 2 p.m.
Dates and locations for other Back the Blue cookouts have not been announced.
