'Breakfast for Babies' raises thousands for March of Dimes

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The 11th annual 'Breakfast for Babies' fundraiser set another record Friday, bringing in more than $48,000 for the March of Dimes.

Organizers say that over the past decade, Chappy's has raised more than $200,000 with this event and all the money raised stays here.

Premature birth is the number one killer of children under the age of 5, and 50 percent of those preterm births are for unknown reasons. The March of Dimes works to give every baby a fighting chance.

By simply buying a breakfast, you can help your neighbor, family, perhaps even your own child. Jeff Barranco knows that well. He's with Chappy's Deli and in the second year of holding Breakfast for Babies, his daughter was born prematurely.

"We had been doing breakfast for babies for two years and on the second year, we raised enough money to buy a bed for the intensive care unit at one of the hospitals in town. Sure enough later that year, my child was born two months early. That same bed that we had bought through Chappy's Deli March of Dimes Breakfast for Babies, helped save her life. She was in that exact bed. So this means a ton to me and my family and to my daughter's life," said Barranco.

If you couldn't make it to Chappy's, you can donate on the March of Dimes website.
