Lieutenant assaulted with weapon at Holman Correctional Facility

ATMORE, AL (WSFA) - A corrections lieutenant at William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore was assaulted Thursday, according to a statement from the Alabama Department of Corrections.

An inmate, Robert Washington, 27, has been charged with assault.

According to Bob Horton with ADOC, Washington assaulted the lieutenant with a makeshift weapon inside the prison around 1 Thursday afternoon.

It happened when the lieutenant was trying to control Washington, who had been "making threatening remarks to other corrections officers," Horton stated.

The lieutenant, whose named hasn't been released, suffered a minor cut above his eyelid. He was treated at the hospital and released.

Washington is serving a 20-year sentence on a 2010 conviction for first-degree robbery out of Montgomery County.

The prison is locked down while ADOC investigates the incident. A Corrections Emergency Response Team will remain at the facility to help prison staff.

Correctional officer Kenneth Bettis was stabbed at the same prison on Sept. 1 and later died from his injuries.
