7 judges chosen to hear suspended Chief Justice Roy Moore's appeal

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley announced the names Monday of seven judges who will be tasked with hearing suspended Chief Justice Roy Moore's appeal.

Bentley signed Executive Order 25 to create the Special Supreme Court in Moore's appeal.

The judges include:

  1. H. Edward McFerrin
  2. Robert G. Cahill
  3. William R. King
  4. James H. Reid, Jr.
  5. Lynn Clardy Bright
  6. Ralph A. Ferguson, Jr.
  7. John D. Coggin

The judges' names were chosen at random from a pool of 50 retired appellate justices and judges, retired circuit court judges, and district court judges on Thursday.

The Court of the Judiciary suspended Moore in September for the remainder of his term saying he urged state probate judges to defy the federal courts on gay marriage.

Moore and his attorneys have decried the appeal process saying that pulling from a list of retired judges will prevent those judges from being held accountable by the people.
