SELMA, AL (WSFA) - A preliminary autopsy has found that the man who attacked police officers at the Selma Police Department on Nov. 7 ultimately took his own life.
Rykemp Giles, 21, was in the booking process at the jail when he pulled a box cutter and attacked the clerk who was handling fingerprinting and mug shots. Another officer who responded was also attacked, and Giles took the officer's gun.
Shots were fired by both Giles and additional officers before the suspect retreated to a far holding cell where he was eventually found dead.
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said Monday that the autopsy found Giles, who was being booked on a domestic violence charge, took his own life. Jackson said Giles was shot at least once by an officer during the situation, but that the wound he sustained from that officer was not fatal.
Following the attack, a review of the facility's security and procedures was ordered.
