MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Downtown Montgomery is about to get another option when it comes to drinking and entertainment. The daiquiri bar chain Wet Willie's is set to open next door to Mellow Mushroom on Commerce Street.
Mayor Todd Strange was joined for the economic announcement by CEO Bill Dickinson and franchisee Greg Lard. This will be Alabama's second location and the 19th around the country. The other Alabama location is in Mobile.
Wet Willie's boasts 18 flavors of daiquiris, including two sugar-free drinks and one non-alcoholic option.
Montgomery is a new town, said Mayor Strange, who spoke of the city's younger population. "This is what the millennials want. They want entertainment."
"The reason Wet Willie's picked Montgomery was because of the entertainment district," Lard explained.
The expectation is to employ between 40 and 50 people with most getting full-time employment at an average of $10 to $12 an hour, plus tips.
Dickinson said his daiquiri chain is serious about underage drinking.
"If you come in with a bad ID," Dickinson said, "you will walk out without it."
He added that his company aims to get rid of those who over-serve and those who serve underage. Dickinson said of the nearly half a billion daiquiris his company has served up, there have been just five citations for underage drinking.
The Wet Willie's store should be open by around March 2017. It's the latest daiquiri shop to open downtown. CC's Daiquiris announced its opening on Monday.
Strange said citizens can expect more announcements over the next three to six months.
