Downtown Opelika Merchants and police prepare for St. Patrick's Day

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - Downtown Opelika Merchants are gearing up to spread the luck of the Irish during St. Patrick's Day "On the Town."

"There is going to be green ice cream at O-Town, green beer at Irish Bred Pub, everywhere is going to have some St. Patrick's Day special," said Carla Nelson, Opelika Mainstreet Director.

Organizers of this event say with St. Patrick's Day falling on a Friday this year they are expecting a large crowd. There will be Irish-themed menu items, live music and more.

"Downtown is an entertainment district. You can grab your drink from one of the restaurants or bars and walk around and listen to the music or visit in stores. We are hoping several hundred people will come," said Nelson.

Statistically St. Patrick's Day is one of the heavier drinking holidays across the country. This has Opelika PD very vigilant.

"We are planning to be alert. We are looking for impaired drivers. We are going to be out there in force this weekend," said Capt. Bobby Kilgore, Opelika Police Department.

Those planning on celebrating this holiday with an adult beverage are reminded to plan ahead. They should have a designated driver or be prepared to call a cab or uber.

St. Patrick's Day "On The Town" in Opelika is a free event and will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
