$1,000 reward offered in case of girl killed in Montgomery drive-by shooting
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Central Alabama CrimeStoppers is offering a $1000 cash reward for information that leads to an arrest in connection to the March 23 drive-by shooting that killed 13-year-old Maribel Barrera at her East Park Avenue home.
According to police department spokesperson Martha Earnhardt, an initial investigation determined that the victim was in her home when she was struck by gunfire from outside the residence. Other residences, all vacant, in the block were also struck by gunfire. The investigation also indicated that there was no intended target.
CrimeStoppers, through its partner Neighbors In Christ, repaired damage done by the shooters and offered counseling.
Police ask individuals with knowledge of the shooting to call CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP, Secret Witness at 625-4000 or the Montgomery Police Department at 625-2831.
Mirabel was a student at Capitol Heights Middle School. Her teachers say she was a great student who was loved by everyone who knew her. Those teachers have already made donations to help with her burial.
As of Monday, four local restaurants have stepped forward to provide food for the funeral. Someone also donated flowers. However, the family remains about $2,000 short of being able to pay for the funeral.
