MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The public is invited to a commemoration marking the 49th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., on the campus of Alabama State University Tuesday.

The brief and solemn ceremony will be held at the Alpha Phi Alpha memorial stone near Lockhart gym, which honors the national fraternity of which, King was a member.

Prayer will be offered for Dr. King and for peace, followed by ASU's interim president, Dr. Leon C. Wilson, and Student Government Association president, Shane Parks, laying a wreath at the Alpha Phi Alpha stone in his honor. The tolling of ASU's campus bell will follow.

In April of 1968, King took a trip to Memphis, Tennessee to support the city's mostly African-American sanitation workers and participate in a strike that polarized and paralyzed the city. He was assassinated on April 4 at the Lorraine Motel.
