ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - An incident at an Elmore County high school has resulted in a teacher being disciplined, Elmore County Public School Superintendent Richard Dennis said.

According to Dennis, the discipline came after an incident that happened earlier this week at Stanhope Elmore High School. Dennis says several teachers were asked to cover other classrooms while school administrators held a department meeting.

While one of the teachers was watching a classroom, two students allegedly formed a noose out of string. The teacher took away the string but then made an inappropriate remark in the hallway about another teacher, Dennis said.

"It did involve a piece of rope the teacher had taken up from a student and due to the nature and the context of the comment to the relationship to that particular prop, the administration felt it was necessary to pursue that and to communicate that sends the wrong message and an inappropriate statement," Dennis said.

Dennis wouldn't specifically say what was allegedly said but made it clear it wasn't threatening, just inappropriate.

Dennis also wouldn't specifically say how he dealt with the incident, only that he dealt with the situation right away.

"Yes, there will be follow-ups to make sure we prevent something like this from happening again, education. Even if you're joking around, you don't do this," Dennis said.

Dennis says the teacher in question was remorseful, and didn't mean to imply anything with the off-handed remark.

Dennis says they also investigated why the students made the noose string in the first place and they determined it was not racial.
