Suspect in custody after hostage situation in Eufaula

EUFAULA, AL (WSFA) - A suspect has been taken into custody after a hostage situation Wednesday morning, according to Eufaula Police Department Facebook page.

Eufaula police say around 2 a.m. officers responded to a residence in the Forest Hills area after reports that gunshots had been fired inside a residence and a suspect was barricaded inside a bedroom.

A perimeter around the residence was established for the Hostage Negotiations Team, police say. The team continued negotiations with the suspect for about two and a half hours before other measures were taken to bring the suspect into custody.

The occupants of the residence escaped without injury, according to police.

The suspect was transported to Medical Center Barbour for treatment. The suspect, who is not being named, was treated along with several officers for minor symptoms of chemical exposure.

The investigation into the incident continues and any charges against the suspect are unknown at this time.
