Officer stabbed at Bessemer correctional facility

BESSEMER, AL (WSFA) - A correctional officer was stabbed by an inmate Wednesday at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

The ADOC says the officer was responding to an emergency call at around 5:30 p.m. when the stabbing occurred. The officer confronted an inmate who was attempting to flee from other officers inside the facility. After the stabbing, officers detained the inmate and removed the makeshift knife he'd used from his possession.

The injured officer was taken to a Birmingham hospital. He is in stable condition.

The inmate is identified as 33-year-old Sahking Burke, and he will be charged with assaulting and stabbing the officer. He is currently serving a life-without-parole Sentance for a 2006 murder conviction out of Jefferson County.

The officer's family was notified, and the facility was placed on lockdown while the ADOC investigated the incident.
