GREENVILLE, AL (WSFA) - A fatal crash Saturday night took the life of a Fort Dale Academy student, according to the Butler County Sheriff's Department.
The crash happened on County Road 50, just outside of Greenville, at 11:57 p.m. The sheriff's department says this crash and another that happened on Airport Road are being investigated by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
ALEA says the accident involving the student, who has not been identified but is confirmed to have been 16 years old, happened when the 2008 GMC Sierra the student was a passenger in ran off the road and hit a tree. The student was ejected from the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle, also 16 years old, was not injured. Both the passenger and the driver are from Greenville.
The second fatal crash happened at 12:45 a.m. when a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe ran off of Airport Road and overturned. The driver, identified as Christopher Smith, 26, of Greenville, was ejected. ALEA says initial findings indicate alcohol was a factor in the crash.
ALEA continues to investigate.
