MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - One lawmaker says there needs to be changes to how state judges like suspended Chief Justice Roy Moore are removed.

Sen. Bill Hightower's bill would give oversight of the Judicial Inquiry Commission to lawmakers.

Under the bill, the legislature would take the JIC's recommendations and need a two-thirds vote in both chambers to actually remove a judge.

"I do not agree that this violates that separation we need to keep that sacred. But it does enable a confirmation of that decision because they're not an elected body," Hightower said.

The bill was carried over and could be back in committee as early as next week.
