MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Media Day was held Tuesday and both Clark Atlanta and Tuskegee head into the season with some preseason stars on the minds of coaches.
Coaches voted on the Preseason Offensive/Defensive Player of the Year, as well as the 2017 Preseason All-Conference First/Second Team.
Clark Atlanta's Quarterback Johnathon McCrary was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after a year in which he threw for over 1,900 yards. The redshirt-senior from Decatur, Georgia, led the SIAC with 14 touchdown passes, and set SIAC single-game records with 456 pass yards and five touchdowns in an October comeback win over Morehouse last season.
On the other side of the ball, Tuskegee's Senior Linebacker Osband Thompson was selected as the Preseason SIAC Defensive Player of the Year. Last season Thompson totaled 137 tackles for the Golden Tigers and helped the team advance to the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the second season in a row.
Thompson, a senior from Miami, Florida, was also named to the SIAC Preseason All-Conference First Team. Thompson was joined by teammates and fellow seniors Leeward Brown and Jonah McCutcheon on that list.
Clark-Atlanta landed four on the list led by Preseason OPOY selection Johnathon McCrary. Wide-Receiver Dre Martin, Defensive Back Kenneth Morgan, and Punt Returner Deandre Jackson were also selections.
Benedict landed the most Preseason All-Conference First Team selections with seven.
Tuskegee also landed second team preseason selections in Wideout Javarrius Cheatham, O-Lineman Lowell Richardson, and Punt Returner Ladarrell Pettway.
Coaches voted on placements in the East and West Divisions.
Tuskegee, with 11 first-place votes and 75 points, was picked to win West division. Miles was chosen to finish second with 60 votes, ahead of Kentucky State, Lane, and Central State respectively.
