Prattville celebrates Founder's Day on Daniel Pratt's birthday
PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) - The City of Prattville celebrated Founder's Day Thursday.
Every year, Prattville makes it a priority to remember and honor Daniel Pratt's birthday, the man who founded the town. Pratt would have been 218 years old Thursday.
City officials joined members of the Autauga County Heritage Association for the celebration. Pratt, known as "Alabama's First Industrialist," founded Prattville in 1839.
A wreath laying ceremony was held at the Pratt Family Cemetery on Gin Shop Hill Road, which overlooks the buildings where Pratt's manufacturing enterprises were housed. Pratt family members were present and honored as well, and Prattville mayor Bill Gillespie, Jr., spoke about Pratt's influence on the city.
"One of the things that Daniel Pratt has instilled in this community has been work ethic religion, just how important family is and I think that still lives on," said Gillespie.
A man dressed like Daniel Pratt also shared historical information at the ceremony, offering a glimpse into the past for those in attendance.
After the wreath-laying ceremony there was a reception and tour at the Prattaugan Museum on Main Street.
