ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - The Elmore County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of an inmate that happened on Friday.
Deputies received a call Friday morning about hearing moaning coming from the woods near Neman Road, just three miles west of Tallassee.
According to Sheriff Bill Franklin, after searching the woods, deputies found a man with meth, marijuana, and hydrocodone on him. Deputies arrested the man, identified as 47-year-old Daniel Stewart.
According to Franklin, after being booked in the county jail, Stewart was placed in a holding cell that was checked every 15 minutes.
At 2:50 p.m., Stewart's check was normal, but at 3:10 p.m., he was found unresponsive, according to the sheriff.
Stewart was known to have a pacemaker, something that the sheriff thought interfered with his drug use.
"We can only hypothesize that Mr. Stewart's pacemaker, along with his drug use, did not fair well on his behalf," the sheriff said.
The man's body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
