ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - A Wetumpka police officer has pleaded not guilty to a charge of manslaughter.

The charge stems from a fatal crash in October of 2016. Andrew Bass was indicted in July on a manslaughter charge in an on duty crash that killed a woman.

The crash happened on Oct. 22 and claimed the life of Elaine Merritt, 52, when Bass' 2010 Dodge Charger collided with Merritt's 2016 Honda Pilot at the intersection of Cambridge Drove and U.S. Highway 231.

Bass was reportedly responding to an emergency call, traveling in excess of 90 miles per hour, but was not running lights or sirens on his police cruiser.

The Elmore County Sheriff's Office served Bass the arrest warrant for manslaughter in July.
