Police chase ends in arrest of 3 men in Auburn
LEE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - Three men are in custody at the Lee County Detention Facility after leading a car chase Friday on U.S. Highway 14 to Auburn.
Marion Cortez Felder, 25, of Fitzpatrick, brother Alexander Darnel Daquan Felder, 26, of Montgomery, and Ronji Duvan Vason, 42, also of Montgomery, were arrested Friday near North College Street in Auburn.
According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, around approximately 3:05 a.m. three suspects broke into a package store in Notasulga, stealing cigarettes, bottles of liquor, and an undisclosed amount of money while also setting off the alarm. Upon setting off the alarm, the owner of the store arrived to find the front door pried open and the three individuals inside.
The sheriff's office says that the three men pushed past the owner and jumped into their getaway car. The owner chased after the getaway car, ramming into the back of it, as a Notasulga police officer noticed the getaway car traveling at a high speed and assumed pursuit.
While on pursuit, liquor bottles were thrown out of the getaway car, damaging the police officer's vehicle, and eventually gun shots were fired. In response, the police officer fired gun shots back at the getaway car along U.S. Highway 14 towards Auburn.
Auburn Police were notified and set up spike strips which proved successful in flattening the tires of the getaway car, but the three suspects continued to travel with flat tires until they crashed into an iron fence behind a building on North College Street.
According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the three men then exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot where they were apprehended. Investigators recovered several homemade masks as well as gloves and a 9mm handgun. All three were charged with attempted murder as well as reckless endangerment after shooting a police officer.
The Notasulga Police Department issued warrants for the arrests of these three on charges of burglary and theft for breaking into the package store.
Both Felder brothers as well as Vason are being held in the Lee County Detention Facility waiting to be transferred to Macon County authorities.
Investigators say that more arrests are expected to come.
