MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - World Diabetes Day has been celebrated every year on Nov. 14 since 2006. It's the largest campaign in the world to raise awareness about diabetes.
There are 422 million people in the world are living with Diabetes, according to the World Health Organization. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation estimates 40,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes every year.
This year, World Diabetes Day is focused on raising awareness about Diabetes among women. One in 10 Women are living with diabetes, that equals about 199 million women in the world. That number is expected to grow to 313 million by the year 2040.
The RSA Tower downtown Montgomery will be lit blue Tuesday evening in honor of World Diabetes Day, along with the RSA building in Mobile.
