WSFA - Walmart, the world's largest retailer, has yanked from its website a controversial shirt that appears to threaten journalists.

The shirt reads "Rope. Tree. Journalist. Some Assembly Required".

Removal happened less than 24 hours after Walmart executives received a request from the Radio Television Digital News Association, a nonprofit professional association for members of the news media.

The shirt had been offered on Walmart's website by a third-party seller. That seller has since removed the shirt from its site as well.

"We are grateful for Walmart's swift action, but dismayed that it, and anyone else selling the shirt, would offer such an offensive and inflammatory product," RTDNA Executive Director Dan Shelley said. "We live in an environment in which political and ideological discourse has deteriorated to the level where some find it appropriate to advocate violence targeting journalists merely for performing their Constitutionally-guaranteed duty to seek and report the truth," he added.

According to the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, at least 34 journalists have been physically assaulted in the U.S. so far in 2017. The Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 48 journalists have been killed in other countries so far in 2017.
