Safety tips to keep your property safe as Christmas approaches

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - With it being eight days until Christmas, it's a time of cheer but it's also a good time to think about keeping your home safe.

Auburn Police Department Lt. Jody Hillyer offered some tips that could help keep your property safe this holiday season.

"Activate your alarm system preferably with an exterior audible device. Having timers on your lights interior and exterior makes it appear as though someone is there," said Hillyer.

There's one thing that many of us do that's a big no-no, especially during this time of year.

"Do not hide your keys under your doormat," said Hillyer. "In my many years of doing this, and we'd go to residential burglaries more than a few times, the welcome mat has been moved and the keys have been removed from under it and easy access at that point."

If you aren't traveling out of town but plan on doing some last-minute holiday shopping, there's some things to remember.

"Park in a well-lit area. Items that you purchased, put them in your trunk, if you have an SUV put it in the cargo area. Think ahead and take something with you you can cover those items with," Hillyer said.

Auburn police also encourages that you refrain from posting about upcoming trips on social media.
